I enjoy autographs in ballpoint pen on paper items such as scratch paper and book pages. They are not as valuable as certified autographs, but they feel personal and authentic…which I think counts for something. They also tend to look good and age well when properly cared for. This Joe Mauer autograph is a great example.

Joe Mauer was part of the last truly great generation of offense-minded catchers. Over his 15-season career, Mauer was a six-time all-star, five-time Silver Slugger, and, for good measure, won three Gold Gloves. He was the 2009 AL MVP. He retired with a fantastic 124 OPS+. Equally impressive was that he did all this with the same team, the Minnesota Twins.

If you keep track of these things, Mauer retired with a career WAR of 55.3, putting him 10th all-time for catchers. The closest active catcher in the game to him is J.T. Realmuto, with 36.3.
