Josh Tomlin was a favorite of mine. He was the perfect #5 starter. He was dependable, had good control, and would occasionally surprise you with a gem. Over the years, Cleveland has had a variety of pitchers who have filled this role, with varying levels of success. Ryan Drese. Billy Traber. Jason Davis. Scott Elarton. Aaron Laffey. Mitch Talbot. T.J. House. Cody Anderson. Adam Plutko. This last season, Logan Allen did an amazing job back there…some of the best I have seen since the Tomlin days.

In 2016, Tomlin had a career year while manning the tail end of the Cleveland rotation. He would go 13-9 over what would be a career high 174 innings for Cleveland, ending the season with a good 103 ERA+. As back-of-the-rotation starters go, he was everything you could ask for.

Tomlin even won a World Series game, pitching 4.2 innings of two-hit ball against the Cubs in game three of the 2016 World Series. He was lit up a couple of days later, getting the loss in game 6, but we won’t talk about that.

All told, Tomlin had a very nice 12-year career in the big leagues, going 69-56 and retiring following the 2021 season.
