From the Collection: Spencer Schwellenbach, sp, Atlanta Braves
…
SP Spencer Schwellenbach was drafted by Cleveland in the 34th round of the 2018 draft. Cleveland didn’t sign him; instead, he signed on to pitch for the University of Nebraska. In 2021, Atlanta drafted Schwellenbach in the 2nd round.

The Braves have a pitching factory that can rival Cleveland’s. Over the last decade, the organization has churned out a steady stream of quality starters, including Max Fried, Kyle Wright, Ian Anderson, and Michael Soroka. Spencer Schwellenbach should be another, assuming he can get healthy, which has been a problem since the day he was drafted.
…
The Braves drafted Schwellenbach, knowing that he needed Tommy John surgery and would miss the entire 2022 season. Since then, he has cemented himself as one of the best pitching prospects in the organization. He made the majors in 2024 and went 8-7 with a 124 ERA+ over 123.2 innings. This past season, he was pitching even better, and through 110 innings, went 7-4 with a 134 OPS+. Then he fractured his elbow and missed the remainder of the season.

Schwellenbach last pitched on June 28th, going seven innings against the Phillies, allowing only three hits while striking out 12. This is the kind of pitcher he will be if he can stay on the field. It’s exciting.
