New Arrival: Russ Christopher, p, Cleveland Guardians

Russ Christopher

Russ Christopher was another member of the Cleveland bullpen who helped propel the team to its last World Series Championship in 1948. He was fantastic that year, pitching 59 innings with a 141 ERA+ and earning a league-leading 17 saves. I was excited to add this autograph to my collection — he is tough to find since he passed away at a young age.

One thing to note about Christopher: dude was a physical mess, and the fact that he could even pitch in 1948 is impressive.

As a child, Christopher had a case of rheumatic fever, which damaged his heart. Despite the lingering effects, Christopher became a professional ballplayer and a well-regarded prospect.

He made the big leagues with the 1942 Philadelphia Athletics and had good seasons in 1944 (14-14, 116 ERA+) and 1945 (13-13, 106 ERA+). In 1945 he even got some MVP votes.

Coming off a fantastic 1947 season (10-7, 132 ERA+ ), he signed with Cleveland and was immediately moved to the pen. It wasn’t his first choice in positions–he wanted to stay a starter–but Cleveland was a contender.

Throughout the 1948 season, Christopher struggled physically despite delivering on the field. His heart problems led to various complications, and it was evident on the mound. After pitching just one inning, he often appeared pale and exhausted.

He retired after the 1948 season, although he attempted a comeback in 1951 that was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, he passed away from rheumatic heart disease in 1954 at the age of 37.
