Card: 2018 Topps Heritage Minors #178 Kyle Muller

This morning the Atlanta Braves shipped pitcher Kyle Muller to the Oakland Athletics as part of a massive, three-team trade centered around Oakland catcher Sean Murphy. While was hoping that Murphy would land in Cleveland, I don’t blame the Guardians for passing up what he would have cost, which was almost certainly some of the organization’s top prospects + at least one major leaguer.

Still, they really do need to do something about the catching situation. The front office seems to think that Bo Naylor and Bryan Lavastida are not the answer, at least in 2023. I don’t think it’s a coincidence they recently signed Meibrys Viloria and invited him to spring training. They know the team isn’t going to have an easy time contending with an offensive black hole at catcher.

Kyle Muller checked the box that Oakland was looking for when it came to major league-ready talent. Muller had a rough, short sophomore stint in the majors in 2022, going 1-1 with an 8.03 ERA/52 ERA+. But he was solid again in AAA and was still the organization’s #1 prospect. Considering Oakland is years away from contending, the Athletics can give Muller the longer look in the majors he needs. It’s a great move for him.
