I’m not a huge Phillies fan, so I sometimes fail to appreciate what a great pitcher Robin Roberts was. Over his 19-seasons in the big leagues, he was selected to seven All-Star teams and won 286 games. From 1950-1956 he had one of the most dominant stretches of any pitcher in history, averaging 22 wins and 319 innings a year. During this period he won 20-games six times, including a 28-win campaign in 1952.

As of today, he is 50th in all-time career WAR with 86.1, though he will almost certainly get dropped down a few pegs since there is a good chance that he will be surpassed by Mike Trout (80.2). Zack Greinke (74.5), Clayton Kershaw (73.8), and Justin Verlander (73.7) are all within striking distance, but it’s yet to be seen if they will last long enough to get the WAR needed.
