I am always excited when an Oakland player lands with the Guardians. Oakland has always been my second favorite team (and I still think they have the best-looking uniforms in baseball), so it’s kind of neat to see a guy wear both uniforms. Dan Otero, David Justice, Barolo Colon, Scott Kazmir, Brandon Moss, Coco Crisp, Yan Gomes, and Nick Swisher are a couple recent examples.

Oakland’s Sean Murphy was also on that list. Luckily–I think–Cleveland missed out on him and instead signed Mike Zunino. While it would have been very cool to add Sean Murphy to the Guard’s line-up, the cost in prospects to get him was prohibitive. Losing at least two good prospects and one major-league ready player is a very high price. While I hope all the best for Murphy, hopefully this a deal that Cleveland does not regret missing out on.

I especially like Murphy since I was able to get his autograph in person. Back in 2016 I went to a Mahoning Valley game, and the visiting team was Oaklands low-A affiliate, the Vermont River Monsters. As a dual Cleveland-Oakland fan, this was a thrilling game.

After driving for two hours to get to the game, I arrived as it started to drizzle. And then pour. Soon the thunder came. I was bummed, since I was leaving town the next day. Lucky for me, a bunch of Oakland player kept stepping out of the clubhouse door. And I came armed with a massive umbrella. I was slowly able to snipe away at all the players I wanted, which included Murphy, A.J. Puk, and Luis Barrera, in the middle of a massive rainstorm.
