Back in 2018, I went to a High School showcase here in Hawaii. It was a small event, and I just snagged the autographs of the players who were on their way to a Division One school.  Wyatt Young, a Mid-Pacific Institute player, was committed to Pepperdine and seemed like a good player, so I got him. I do remember him being very…serious…when I got his autograph. it was weird. But then again, asking high school players for autographs still feels weird, so who am I to talk?

Fast forward to 2022. Young went on to be a three-year starter at Pepperdine (hitting .319/.377/.387), hit well in the Cape in 2019, and was drafted by the Mets in the 15th round of the 2021 draft. While he is undersized, does not have a ton of pop, and is limited defensively to second, there is no denying that he is a pure hitter with excellent bat-to-ball skills.

So how is Young doing in his first season of pro ball? Amazing! I think. It’s a little confusing.

#1. Young opened the season by spending less than a week with the Mets High-A affiliate. He hit well enough (.214/.389/.214), and the Mets probably recognized he needed to get some time against some more advanced pitching.

#2. So he was promoted to the Mets AAA affiliate and proceeded to destroy pitchers to the tune of .352/.446/.437 over 71 at-bats. There was even a homerun in there. But, for reasons I don’t know, he was demoted to AA-ball.

#3. So now Young is with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and hitting .220/.263/.276. Which is not great. I am not sure what the deal is. Still, he is only 22 and in his first year of pro ball, so there is plenty to like.
