From the Field: Kevin Smith, ss, Toronto Blue Jays

Kevin Smith was drafted in the 4th round (129th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017 out of the University of Maryland.

He has an ok start to his pro career in 2017, hitting .271/.312/.466 with 8 HR at Rookie League Bluefield. This season…he has knocked it up a notch. He destroyed low-A pitching (.355/.407/.639 with 7 HR), and then when he was bumped up to high-A he kept it up (.292/.353/.502 with 14 HR). Those are awesome numbers. He was always projected to have plus power, and it was just a matter of his hitting tools coming around. The fact that he is a middle infielder only makes him that much more exciting.

He opened up the 2018 season in the bottom half of the Blue Jays Top 30 prospect list, but he will easily be in the top half–and high in that top half–come 2019.
