Chaminade University (@goswords) resurrected its baseball program this past season, fielding a team for the first time in 43 years. Starting a new program from the ground up is never easy, and this is especially true here in Hawaii, where recruiting mainland talent is always a challenge because of the state’s remote location and insane cost of living. One of the brightest points of this inaugural season is the emergence of one of those mainlanders, freshman outfielder Ryan Ruch (@ryanjruch). Ruch is easily the team’s best hitter, and on the season he is hitting .373 with 3 HR and a .487 OBP. While DII baseball is known for its occasional video game offensive numbers, those numbers are impressive, doubly so when you consider he’s a freshman. Point in fact: his OBP is one of the ten best of any DII freshman in the country. You have to think that MLB scouts have noticed this as well–so I won’t be shocked when he becomes, eventually, the school’s first MLB draft pick.
