William Toffey was drafted three times before he went pro; Yankees tried in 2014 (23rd Round), Orioles in 2016 (25th), and then finally the A’s in 2017 (4th).
He was drafted out of Vanderbilt. His junior year was really impressive, hitting .354/.475/.602 with 12 HR. He also only had 30 strikeouts in 206 at-bats.
As a pro, he has continued to hit well. This season with High-A Stockton he is hitting .240/.369/.380; his average is a little low but part of that is because he walks so much–26 walks to 37 K in121 at-bats.
He is towards the bottom of most Oakland Top-30 prospect lists. He is a great hitter and is good on defense, but there are questions about how much power he will bring. If that develops he will move quick.
