New Arrival: Josh Tomlin, p, Atlanta Braves

Josh Tomlin
Josh Tomlin signed 2017 Topps – from Spring Training 2018

Josh Tomlin spent eight seasons with the Indians, serving primarily as the teams #5 starter. And as #5 starters go…he was about as good as you will find. And there were a number of occasions over the years that he was simply brilliant, highlighted by his starts in the 2016 ALDS and ALCS.

But what made Tomlin so reliable–his control–is also what made him hittable.

Unless his stuff was on point he was going to give up homers, and lots of them. And as Tomlin got older and his stuff less sharp, the home runs piled up. His 2018 campaign with the Indians was a disaster (2-5, 6.14 ERA/1.479 WHIP), and it really looked like it was the end of the line for Josh Tomlin. It was a great run.

Tomlin signed with the Braves in March and has had a mini-resurgence as a full-time pen arm in 2019.

Over 14.2 innings he is carrying a 3.07 ERA/0.955 WHIP/142 ERA+. Remember I said he was a control artist? He has 12 K’s and only a single walk this season. Most shocking is that he has only given up one homer this season–he is allowing 0.6 per 9IP, compared to 3.2 in 2018.

So neat. Good for him. Hope things work out.
